Citizen Oceanography Lecture
What better way to launch the 2015 Series than with this presentation by Professor Federico Lauro, Director and Captain of Indigo V, champion sailor, and microbiologist at University of NSW and Nanyang Technical University, Singapore.
Guests were entertained by Federico as he talked about the Indigo V Expedition’s 6500nm concept cruise across the Indian Ocean, which developed a working blueprint for ‘citizen oceanography’.
A healthy ocean eco-system underpins habitable life on the planet, national security and business interests. Yet we continue our assault on this very fragile eco-system with no real information, especially when it comes to the beneficial microbes that support the food chain.
Federico explained that together with cutting edge instrumentation and world cruiser involvement, there is a real opportunity to crowd-source the collection of oceanographic data that will lead to the scientific preservation of our oceans for generations to come.
