The Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) congratulates Dr Clive McMahon on being awarded the Australian Antarctic Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Australia’s Antarctic Program through marine mammal telemetry and ocean observing systems.

An internationally recognised Antarctic and marine ecologist, Dr McMahon has spent more than three decades advancing our understanding of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. His pioneering work combines animal-borne sensors with oceanographic research, enabling scientists to collect critical environmental data from some of the most remote and challenging regions on Earth.

Over his career, Dr McMahon has undertaken 22 Antarctic expeditions, contributed more than 220 peer-reviewed publications and played a leading role in transforming marine animals into platforms for ocean observation. Today, animal-borne sensors provide more than half of all ocean profile data collected annually in the Southern Ocean, delivering vital information that improves understanding of ocean circulation, climate change and ecosystem dynamics.

At SIMS, Dr McMahon serves as Operations and Scientific Manager of the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) Animal Tracking Facility’s Satellite Tagging Program. He also co-led the establishment of the Global Ocean Observing System’s Animal-Borne Ocean Sensors (AniBOS) network, endorsed by UNESCO in 2020, and currently serves as Co-Chair of both AniBOS and the GOOS Biology and Ecosystems Panel.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr McMahon has played an important role in building Australia’s future Antarctic science capability. He has created opportunities for students, early career researchers and expeditioners to gain hands-on experience in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, sharing not only his expertise but also his passion for the region. Through his mentorship, generosity and belief in others, he has helped launch careers, fostered collaborations and inspired a new generation of scientists to contribute to Antarctic research.
