SIMS 2024 Year 10 Work Experience Program

SIMS ran a structured work experience program as a part of our education and outreach function up until 2019. In 2020 we were impacted by COVID and paused the program for a number of years while the Institute worked to re-establish our normal operations.

In 2023 we ran a successful pilot where we had an intake of 4 Year 10 students in November. This pilot allowed students to work across a wide range of our operations at SIMS from technical and aquarium services, through support of some of our research projects to communications and social media.

After this successful pilot we are looking to build an ongoing commitment to supporting a Year 10 group each year and allowing students to experience what a career in marine science or a related discipline may look like for them.

In 2024 we are pleased to announce that we will support an intake of 7 students. Some key details of the program are outlined below.

  • Program runs from Monday November 11 to Friday November 15 inclusive.
  • Participants will need to attend SIMS (Chowder Bay) each day from 9am to 4pm for the duration.
  • There will be an information session held on-site at Chowder Bay, November 6 which your parents or guardians are welcome to attend, this will include a brief tour of the facility.
  • Participants will need to be able to have transport options to attend Chowder Bay – keeping in mind that public transport options are limited to the site.

In 2023 we did not publicise the program and received over 50 applications for 4 positions. During the program we did publish updates on our social media channels. As we come into 2024 this increased profile of the program has resulted in SIMS receiving over 100 expressions of interest already this year. To manage the large amount of interest in a fair and equitable manner the application process for 2024 is:

  • April 2 (Tuesday 10am) – Applications open and applicants are invited to apply to participate in the program by completing a short online form.
  • May 31 (Friday 12pm) – Applications close and the form will no longer accept new applications.
  • June 3-7 – SIMS selection committee will review and assess applications
  • June 10 (Monday) – SIMS will notify successful candidates by SMS and Email, including an offer acceptance form.
  • June 12 (Wednesday) – Successful candidates must provide written acceptance of the offer, including approval by a parent or guardian by completing the acceptance form.
  • November 6 (Wednesday 4pm) – Information session at SIMS including site and facility tour for participants and parents/guardians.
