The Sydney Institute of Marine Science was delighted to take part in the Sydney Science Trail at the Australia Museum for three incredibly fun and action-packed days.
Our interactive display gave students and visitors the opportunity to discover the fascinating world of marine science. A highlight was looking at live plankton through microscopes and seeing the tiny organisms that form the foundation of our marine food webs. Visitors were amazed by the diversity of life found in just a small sample of seawater!
Our team also shared some of the exciting research currently underway at SIMS, including projects focused on marine restoration, biodiversity, animal tracking and the health of Sydney Harbour. It was wonderful to speak with so many curious young people about the challenges facing our oceans and the work scientists are doing to better understand and protect marine environments.
We particularly enjoyed discussing careers in marine science and the many pathways available to high school students interested in working with our oceans—from research and fieldwork to technical support, education, communication and conservation.
Thank you to the Australia Museum, the Sydney Science Trail team and everyone who stopped by to ask questions, explore the microscopic world of plankton and share our enthusiasm for marine science.
